XELODA - SMART

  • Xeloda is an effective new oral chemotherapy that was introduced as a new way to target the cancer-killing agent 5-FU (5-fluorouracil) straight into the cancer. This is a less distressing and burdensome way of treating women with breast cancer compared to intravenous (often referred to as i.v.) chemotherapy.
    • 5-FU works primarily through preventing the cancer cell duplicating its DNA, thus stopping its growth and eventually killing it.
  • Xeloda only becomes active when it reaches the cancer/tumour within a woman's body. This means Xeloda is converted into the cancer-killing agent 5-FU at the site of the cancer/tumour, where it is needed, and has less affect on a woman's healthy cells - for example: cells responsible for hair growth.
  • This unique way in which Xeloda works is responsible for providing women with breast cancer with a powerful treatment with a better side effect profile compared to i.v. chemotherapy.
  • Roche is committed to the treatment of women with breast cancer, and believes that by replacing burdensome i.v. chemotherapy with Xeloda tablets, will improve the daily lives of women with breast cancer.

XELODA - SIMPLE

  • Xeloda is taken with water and swallowed. It does not need to be injected into the body.
  • A woman takes Xeloda twice a day after food (morning and night within 30 minutes following a meal). She is not required to fast. This simple treatment schedule provides a woman with continuous exposure to cancer-killing 5-FU in the same way as with continuous i.v. chemotherapy but without the burden of frequent hospital visits.

XELODA - POWERFUL

  • The data to support Xeloda has some of the longest survival time reported for women with breast cancer that has spread.
  • Studies have demonstrated that Xeloda is more effective than other chemotherapy in treating women with breast cancer.
  • Women treated with Xeloda live longer. Xeloda is among the very few agents that has demonstrated a survival benefit3, and extraordinary tumour control rates4, in women with breast cancer that has spread. This confirms the effectiveness and power of Xeloda.

XELODA - KIND

  • As Xeloda is a tablet taken orally; it eliminates the discomfort and burden of i.v. chemotherapy. Women feel that receiving their chemotherapy via needles and devices under their skin is one of the most distressing and burdensome aspects of i.v. chemotherapy.
  • Xeloda does not cause women the dreaded and upsetting side effect of hair loss (alopecia) and has little effect on blood counts (neutropenia) unlike many other breast cancer treatments, meaning that women are at less risk for infections on Xeloda.
  • Women treated with Xeloda experience less severe side effects commonly associated with i.v. chemotherapy such as diarrhoea, fatigue, nausea and vomiting.
  • In addition to shrinking the tumours, Xeloda relieves the pain women experience as a result of breast cancer.

XELODA - LIBERATING

  • Xeloda can be taken at home.
  • Women feel taking their medication at home is one of the main advantages since it provides them with the freedom to carry on with their daily lives without the disruption of frequent hospital visits.
  • Women can spend a lot of their time in hospital clinics if they are receiving i.v. chemotherapy, when they could be spending time with family and friends.

XELODA - PREFERRED·

  • Nine out of 10 women prefer oral chemotherapy to i.v. chemotherapy as they feel it is convenient, gives them the freedom to live their lives and avoids problems with i.v. lines.
