Access to healthcare is a complex challenge and there is no ‘one size fits all’ solution. At Roche we are partnering with local stakeholders to develop tailored access solutions that really make a difference to peoples’ lives. By working in partnership with stakeholders across the healthcare spectrum – from governments and payers to non-governmental organizations, multilaterals, and insurance companies — we will continue to develop tailored solutions that help overcome the barriers and ensure rapid, broad and sustainable access, no matter where in India people live.

Many WHO reports have consistently quoted that half the world lacks access to essential health services, and 100 million still get pushed into extreme poverty because of health expenses. LMICs (lower- and middle-income countries) face severe challenges on multiple access related aspects such as geographic accessibility, availability, financial accessibility, and acceptability of services. Roche believes that comprehensive universal health coverage helps support stable economies and strong societies, and is fundamental to addressing inequality in access to healthcare, particularly in LMICs. Roche is accelerating its ongoing efforts in this area with our goal to double the number of patients being treated with our innovative therapies in low and lower middle income countries by the end of 2026, as well as our ambition to double patient access to novel, high-medical-value diagnostics to people around the world. Roche’s commitment to LMIC countries will vastly solve many of these challenges. It is quite clear that driving access will not only drive better health outcomes for these underserved markets, but will also reduce global poverty, strengthen global health ecosystems, enabling sustainable, equitable and inclusive economic growth.

The key to unlocking this level of access would involve concerted efforts along the entire patient journey, on a three-pronged approach – Policy, Platforms and Projects. In India, our access strategy stands strong on 5 key pillars.

We’re proud to have made some small yet significant strides towards realizing our access ambitions. Here are some key recent examples

Our flagship, patient centric support program for cancer, hemophilia and rare diseases patients providing a basket of 11 services, which includes free and subsidized drug support; has impacted 7000+ patient lives till date. Roche has partnered with Karkinos - a startup funded by Tata  Group and Reliance - intending to create equitable access to cancer care, leveraging its  innovative technology platform - to develop uniform standards of patient care to battle  cancer through technology-enabled distributed care models. The partnership endeavors  to work with health systems in the country and deliver equitable quality care to people,  through an emphasis on early detection, referral strengthening, and standardized care  pathways. We have entered into a partnership to implement this solution across five ecosystems in a staggered manner.

Through our decentralized cluster based model, our Kerala State Cluster is part of the prestigious City Cancer Challenge, aiming to improve access to quality cancer care in the city of Kochi. City Cancer Challenge is a city-based partnership initiative that aims to improve access to quality cancer care in cities around the world by transforming the way stakeholders from the public and private sectors collectively design, plan and implement cancer solutions.
